How My First Hike in Seoul Transformed My Life
Koreans are passionate about hiking. Anyone who has spent even a day on a Korean mountain can attest to this.
In my first days after relocating to Seoul, I decided to take a stroll behind the university complex. The path led to a hill, and my curiosity drove me to follow it. Soon, I found myself atop the mountain with a breathtaking view of the city. I was instantly captivated by the juxtaposition of the urban jungle and nature. I later discovered that Seoul has many mountains, and the one behind my university holds historical significance.
The Wall of Hanyang (Seoul)
In the 14th century, King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, ruled Korea. To protect the capital, Hanyang (the old name for Seoul), he built a massive stone wall stretching along the ridges of four inner mountains: Bugaksan, Naksan, Namsan, and Inwangsan.
While enjoying the view from the mountaintop, two soldiers approached me. It turned out I had unknowingly entered a restricted military area. The soldiers were extremely polite but informed me I had to leave. Fortunately, I managed to snap a picture of the winding city wall along the ridge, with Namsan Tower and the city in the background.
This photo captures the essence of Seoul’s unique blend of history, nature, and modernity. It serves as a reminder of my early days in the city and the unexpected adventures that can come from a simple hike. Little did I know that after this day, photography and mountaineering would become my hobbies, inspiring me for years to come. I’m happy to say that this passion lasts even today.
Note to Self: Curiosity often pays off. A small winding path can lead to unexpected adventures and new passions. Stay curious about the world around you and beyond.
