How To Shoot Better

Atrigu warrior, Papua New Guinea, 2015

Achieving greatness doesn’t have to be difficult.

There have been people living long before us. So, learning from the masters can be a viable shortcut.

1. FIND the subject you want to photograph. If it’s hard or you find yourself tucked, then look for people with genuine emotional expressions. People admire other people at work or doing something.

2. FIGURE out what story you want to tell. This will help you to define the composition you should use.

3. FRAME your subject. Decide what to keep insight into the frame, and what to exclude.

4. FOCUS on the main subject. How would you like to learn the attention of the viewer inside the picture? Consider what depth of field you want to apply. Think of the available light. Adjust the camera settings.

5. FIRE the shutter release sounds easy. Don’t rush! Patience will reward you. Look for the emotional expression. Shoot more than you think you need!

bonus tip: adjusting camera settings must be second nature to you. You should be able to change the aperture, iso, and shutter speed without looking. Practice at home, and you will be able to keep full attention on your subject.
